Oxidative and histopathological damage in liver and plasma of rats after SO2 inhalation: SO2 inhalation damage in liver and plasma of rats

Effect of different concentrations of SO2 onantioxidant enzymes and histopathology was investigatedin liver and plasma of rats of both the sexes under naturaland experimental conditions. Naturally exposed, house rat,Rattus rattus (Group I) were collected from urban residentialareas at Ludhiana, Indi...

Naturally exposed, house rat,Rattus rattus (Group I) were collected from urban residentialareas at Ludhiana, India and acclimatized for one monthin the laboratory. Laboratory bred house rats were dividedinto four groups. Each group was further subdivided intotwo subgroups having six male and six female rats. Group II(control rats) were exposed to filtered air in one m3 exposurechamber for five hours day-1 for 28 days; Group III, GroupIV and Group V were exposed to 5, 10 and 15 ppm of SO2respectively. All the three concentrations of SO2 showedsignificant increase in lipid peroxidation (LPO) levelsfollowed by significant decrease in the activities of superoxidedismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione reductase(GR) and non-significant decrease in glutathione peroxidase(GPx) and glutathione (GSH) levels in plasma and liver ofrats of both the sexes. The increase in LPO levels was moresignificant at 15 ppm concentration as compared to other twoconcentrations in all the organs. The results showed that SO2is an oxidative damage causing agent to vital organs of rats.
