北海道の公立動物園におけるオオカミ（Canis lupus）の飼育史

本稿は、北海道の公立動物園でこれまでに飼育されてきた海外産オオカミ（Canis lupus）の記録を整理し、その動向と特徴を確認することを目的とする。調査の結果、道内の公立動物園が1956年から2022年現在までの66年間で5亜種128頭のオオカミを飼育してきたことを明らかにできた。また、公立動物園で飼育されるオオカミには、過去には海外から「親善」のための使節として来園するなど特定の都市や地域と結びつけられる傾向がみられたが、2000年代以降は絶滅した在来種であるエゾオオカミと関連づけて飼育・展示されていることを確認した。道内の公立動物園におけるオオカミの飼育形態は、かつては単独あるいはペアを基本とする形を主流としていたが、1980年代以降は群れを飼育・展示することが目指されていた。 こうした変化は、オオカミに関わる知見の更新や議論の蓄積を反映して起きたものと考えられる。飼育史の解明を進めることで、在来種が絶滅した後の北海道におけるオオカミに対する理解のありかたやイメージの変遷過程を把握するための一助とすることができる。 The purpose of this paper is to describe the history of captive foreign wolves (Canis lupus) kept in public zoos in Hokkaido, Japan. The Hokkaido wolf (C. l. hattai), a native subspecies of Hokkaido, became extinct around 1900 due to hunting pressure. This paper is part of a study aimed at clarifying the process of change in attitudes toward wolves that occurred in Hokkaido after the extinction of native subspecies. In the 1956, public zoos in Hokkaido began keeping wolves from foreign countries. To date, a total of 128 wolves of five subspecies (C. l. albus, C. l. chanco, C. l. lupus, C. l. lycaon, C. l. occidentalis) have been kept. While it is impossible to study wolves in the wild in Hokkaido, where native subspecies have become extinct, the general understanding of wolves as wildlife and their ecology has been updated from the past by records and information brought from abroad. This paper points out that this process of change in understanding can be seen in the way wolves are kept and exhibited in zoos.
