Summary: | This research project takes a practical approach on issues related to tourism impact on protected areas [PA] and sustainable tourism within rural areas. The natural environment in northern climate regions is extremely fragile to physical impacts of tourism, which makes it sensitive to the physical impact of tourism. Recent growth in tourism, combined with the image of tourists about the area suggests that further increase and damage can compromise a continuous use due to environmental degradation. This project involves a literature study about current trends in PA management, an assessment of the physical impact of tourism on the natural environment in PA on case sites in Iceland and Japan. Furthermore the research will shade light on the economic and social factors of tourism. Expected results are likely to provide valuable tools for a proactive management of PA in vulnerable areas for a sustainable utilization of natural resources for tourism.
