An integrated phenotypic and genotypic approach to the stock discrimination of Atlantic salmon

This paper demonstrates the linking of two techniques to develop a database to discriminate the continent of origin of Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar L.) caught at Greenland. First, protein electrophoresis was used to distinguish North American from European Atlantic salmon based on different frequen...

First, protein electrophoresis was used to distinguish North American from European Atlantic salmon based on different frequencies of alleles at sevenprotein loci. Scale characteristics of the first sea zone from these fish and from tagged salmon ( N = 215), all caught at Greenland in 1986, were then analysed by discriminant analysis. The misclassification rate was 19.0% and error rates were ±1.0%. It is recommended that this database be used to classify salmon sampled from commercial catches taken at Greenland in 1986.
