Developing future climate projections for impact assessments in the polar regions

Polar climates in a global context remain poorly understood, as does the interactions between the different components of the Polar climate system. These knowledge gaps are leading to large uncertainties in climate change projections for the Polar regions, which together with other sources of uncert...

These knowledge gaps are leading to large uncertainties in climate change projections for the Polar regions, which together with other sources of uncertainty hampers mitigation and adaptation efforts. The PolarRES project funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 programme is addressing these uncertainties by (1) narrowing some of the important knowledge gaps on atmosphere-ocean-sea ice interactions, and (2) using a storylines approach to develop future climate projections. This presentation will briefly introduce and highlight recent progress made in (1) but primarily focus on the novel innovative approach and multi-disciplinary framework taken in (2) for developing impact-relevant climate projections in the Arctic and Antarctica using an ensemble of regional climate models.
