(61) Women have been pioneers in many of the mining camps of Idaho, Nevada, Colorado and Arizona, and here in Alaska, mingling in the rush to the Klondike, were to be found an important cop tinge t of honest, energetic, plucky women who accompanied the r husbands or male relatives or" friends. In ma^y instances the women developed greater endurance than the men, and they had a vast deal more patience. Fully 500 women went over the Chilkoot and Skagway passes and down the river in the spring of 1898. Not a few of thesev had famil es, and several babes in their swaddling clothes survived the exposure and discomforts incident to camp life on the trails a^d the river. It was rot unusual to observe a young couple with a good outfit, who seemed to regard the vicissitudes of the icy trains and swift rivers as one grand, prolonged frolic, and many a cabin and camp was made brighter through the gentle ministrations of a good woman.
