Physiography.—We are at Cape Sabine which juts into Baffin Bay from the extreme eastern coast of Ellesmere Land. Cape Sabine is only separated from Hayes Peninsula, Greenland, by Smith's Strait. Before us is Captain Peary's ship, Diana, putting into winter quarters. Biography and History.—Robert Edwin Peary was born at Cresson, Pennsylvania, in 1856. He served the United States Government as a civil engineer until 1891, when he organized an expedition the result of which established the insularity of Greenland. He also did some valuable work in the study of the Smith Sound Eskimos. After several intermediate voyages Peary again started north in 1898. The greatest forethought was bestowed upon the organization of this expedition, a four years' programme being laid down at the outset, and a system of relief expeditions provided for. A distinctive feature was the utilization of a company of Eskimos. Although unsuccessful as regards the discovery of the North Pole, the expedition achieved the accurate survey of the northern limit of Greenland. It advanced as far north as latitude 84 deg. 17 min. 27 sec, the highest point reached in the western hemisphere up to that time. Lieutenant Peary had now been promoted to the rank of Commander and on his return he was elected president of the American Geographical Society. After another expedition, in 1905 on the especially built "Roosevelt," Peary started in 1908 on the journey which was to bring him final success. With his negro servant and four Eskimos, Peary reached the North Pole on the sixth day of April, 1909. Refer again to this view when considering Transportation, Political, Social arid Economic History of America, Nature Study, People and Homes.
