Summary:The planktonic foraminiferal fauna was studied from 186 samples collected by the R/V Melville in the Southwest Atlantic Ocean during 1972. These species can be divided according to their temperature requirements into cold-temperate, warm-temperate, warm and cosmopolitan species. Based on the distribution of these species, 4 types of surface water were determined.
