Description
Summary:If a post office closes in rural Saskatchewan, does anyone in Quebec or Newfoundland care? Between 1986 and 1994 the answer to this question was most certainly “yes.” The grassroots protest organization, Rural Dignity of Canada, was formed in December 1986 primarily in opposition to the then recently announced plans of Canada Post to rationalize (i.e. downsize)their network of rural post offices. A national organization, Rural Dignity was run almost entirely out of a small donated office space in Barachois de Malbaie, a small village in the Gaspe region of Quebec. The story of how this group of disparate individuals came together and exercised a sustained influence on the local, regional and national political stage is one that has yet to be comprehensively told.
