Many resist these labels, quietly opposing the reconstruction and tourism movements that have dictated much of Dawson City’s community history since the 1960s. Although they admit, “We’re living off our history, ” residents resist the power which has been given to the federal agency, Parks Canada, to decide which buildings should be restored and which should be left to die a “natural death.” Dawson City représente beaucoup de choses pour beaucoup de gens. Pour les membres de la communauté blanche locale, Dawson City est le lieu où ils vivent, au cœur d’une destination touristique et d’un site historique globalement reconnu. Plusieurs refusent cette image, s’opposant tranquillement aux mouvements de tourisme et de reconstruction qui ont dicté l’histoire d’une grande partie de la communauté de Dawson City depuis les années 1960. Bien qu’ils admettent qu’ils « vivent hors de leur histoire », les résidents résistent au pouvoir qui a été donné à l’institution fédérale, Parcs Canada, quand vient le moment de décider quels bâtiments devraient être restaurés et lesquels devraient être abandonnés à leur « belle mort ».
