Sémantique des affixes incorporants en langue inuit (Groenland oriental)

In the Inuit language, the verbalizing affixes involved in the phenomenon known as «noun incorporation» have been studied not as much for their meaning as for their morpho-syntactic status and diachronic origin. These affixes, however, present a problem for semantic description: a given form often corresponds to several lexical meanings which apparently bear no relation to one another in our Indo-European languages. Using examples taken from Tunumiisut (East Greenland dialect), the prime aim of this paper is to show that the superficial variety of the meanings is a misleading consequence of translation, which splits up the semantic unity of each form. After outlining the contents of the traditional debates about these affixes, we try to single out the true signification of some of them. We then suggest that the formal confusion of distinct verbalizing affixes can give rise to cases of remotivation on the part of the speakers. A parallel is finally drawn between the meaning of certain verbal modality affixes and the aspectual dimension conveyed by the verbalizing affixes. Les affixes verbalisants, impliqués en langue inuit dans le phénomène appelé «incorporation nominale», ont moins retenu l'attention pour leur sens que pour leur statut morpho-syntaxique et leur origine diachronique. Ces affixes posent cependant un problème à la description sémantique: une forme donnée correspond souvent à plusieurs sens lexicaux apparemment sans liens dans nos langues indo-européennes. Le premier objectif de cet article est de montrer, à partir de quelques exemples empruntés au tunumiisut (dialecte du Groenland oriental), que la variété superficielle des significations est un piège de la traduction, qui diffracte l'unité sémantique propre à chaque forme. Après avoir exposé le contenu des débats traditionnels concernant ces affixes, nous essayons de dégager pour quelques-uns d'entre eux leur véritable signification.
