International interest in the Arctic will continue to rise in coming years as a growing number of states, corporations, civil society organizations and international organizations will engage themselves in the region. Although the Arctic Council and the United Nations are looking closely at many challenges facing the Arctic region in the years ahead, there is no official and permanent mechanism responsible for security related issues. The establishment of a structure or process that would look at security and defense challenges should be considered before the increase accessibility of the Arctic region becomes even more difficult to manage. This requires a solid, effective regional and global cooperation that constantly adapts to new opportunities and conditions. The Arctic Council emerges as the preferred organization to manage upcoming security challenges in the Arctic region.
