Environmental Guide for ASW in Eastern Canadian Shallow Waters. Part 1. An assessment of the State of Knowledge

This guide identifies and presents information on environmental parameters that can affect ASW operations in the shallow water areas off the east coast of Canada. The first part of the guide is an assessment of the state of knowledge on each of the parameters covered. The impact of the parameters on...

The first part of the guide is an assessment of the state of knowledge on each of the parameters covered. The impact of the parameters on ASW operations is assessed and the resolution and coverage required for each parameter is defined. Existing data sets are then examined. evaluated and deficiencies noted. Areas where future efforts in data collection should be placed can thus be identified. The second part contains the actual environmental information for a broad range of parameters covering the following categories: bottom features, climatology, oceanography, biological activity, economic activity and acoustics. The information is presented in a summary format such that areal distributions and temporal variability can be readily accessed by non-specialist users. All parts of this guide should provide the user with a better knowledge of the environmental particulars of the area and permit a better use of ASW assets. Finally, the potential of Geographic Information Systems (GISs) for the storage, retrieval and display of this environmental data is investigated. A simple PC based GIS application was developed and is presented. Text Sea ice Defense Technical Information Center: DTIC Technical Reports database Canada
