The process permits the user to accept default values or input the desired mean and standard deviation required for the output image. The function creates a new image that raises the contrast in low contrast regions and lowers the contrast in those sections that are too high. This allows the user to view the entire image with one enhancement that brings out the majority of features, whether they be sea surface temperature gradients in an infrared ocean image or sea ice features (floes, leads, etc.) in a visible or infrared polar image. The speed and flexibility of the wallis filter is a powerful tool the operator can implement to increase the image content readily extracted.
