This was the first international experiment having daily SAR coverage with real-time imagery downlinked to the ships in the field. During MIZEX '87, two INTERA Synthetic Aperture Radar equipped aircrafts; X-band SAR Systems were deployed to collect ice edge imagery. Observations made from this imagery enabled them to select areas of special interest for intensive study and sea truthing, and to plan successive SAR missions.
