A brief review of the dielectric properties of sea ice and of commonly used surface and volume scattering theories is presented. We provide a description of the backscatter measurements performed and experimental techniques used. Discussion of the development of inexpensive short-range polarimetric radars is the topic of chapter 4. In Chapter 5, we discuss ice surface characterization data and techniques, including computation of surface rms height and correlation length and air bubble distribution statistics. Chapter 6 consists of comparison of backscatter measurements and theory. Keywords: Military publications, Periodicals.
