The Arctic Ambient Noise Prediction computer programs are of a tactical and management information nature, and provide estimates of the intensities of under-ice noise in the Arctic. These estimates are based on empirical relationships between ice motion and noise levels. The ice motion is predicted from the U.S. Navy's Polar Ice Prediction System (PIPS), and the noise intensities for regions throughout the arctic are used as indications of where noise levels are high (or low) and the duration of noise events.
