Deuterium Diffusion in a Soil-Water-Ice Mixture.

An experiment was performed to determine the rate of equilibration of deuterium between the ice and liquid phases of water in partially frozen soil. The results of this experiment are consistent with a diffusion rate of deuterium in ice of 1 or .0000000002 sq cm/s. A method for calculating the appro...

Description
Summary:An experiment was performed to determine the rate of equilibration of deuterium between the ice and liquid phases of water in partially frozen soil. The results of this experiment are consistent with a diffusion rate of deuterium in ice of 1 or .0000000002 sq cm/s. A method for calculating the approximate equilibration time, given the size of the ice crystals in the system, is provided. This calculation compares well with the experimental results.
