U.S. Navy Hindcast Spectral Ocean Wave Model Climatic Atlas: North Atlantic Ocean
Existing wave climatologies are primarily based on visual ship observations. These climatologies may be unreliable, particularly in data-sparse regions. Summary: | Existing wave climatologies are primarily based on visual ship observations. These climatologies may be unreliable, particularly in data-sparse regions. Shipborne wave recorders have provided reliable wave data for selected areas of the oceans, but a scarcity of these data remains. This pilot atlas introduces a new, numerically derived, historical data set in the form of a wind and wave climatology. It is intended to provide the design, scientific and operational communities a more accurate representation of the overall wave climate of the North Atlantic Ocean than is available from other sources.
