Blue Mountain Lake; An Archeological Survey and an Experimental Study of Inundation Impacts.

During August, 1977, the Arkansas Archeological Survey conducted a field study for the Corps of Engineers, Little Rock District, of portions of Blue Mountain Lake in west central Arkansas exposed by a lake drawdown project. Thirty-nine archeological sites were recorded during the study, one of which...

Thirty-nine archeological sites were recorded during the study, one of which, 3L059, may, with additional testing, yield information important to the prehistory of the region. All of the sites recorded have suffered some physical damage due to 30 years of freshwater immersion, many have been depleted by relic collecting during this and previous drawdowns. A separate experimental study designed to test certain effects of inundation upon archeological sites was performed. The experiment involved creating archeological context situations for a variety of artifacts and features in an area to be inundated, and conducting preliminary analyses upon the materials used as a basis for post-inundation comparison. The study was designed to correspond with the Reservoir Inundation Studies Project being conducted by the National Park Service, and provide comparative data for studies carried out at archeological sites in other reservoirs.
