Summary: | This plan is for the conduct of marine geophysical surveys in support of the AN/SQS-26 sonars. Such surveys are needed immediately so that AN/SQS-26 sonars now programmed into new ship construction can be employed effectively in strategic ocean areas. The performance of a long range sonar system using surface duct, bottom bounce, and convergence zone propagation is critically dependent upon the oceanic properties that influence the detection path. The survey described in this plan primarily will provide measurements of the static and quasi-static environmental factors. The time-varying environmental factors on the list will be provided by in-situ measurements made aboard the sonar-equipped ship and/or from the Anti-Submarine Warfare Environmental Prediction System (ASWEPS). |
