Oceanographic Observations. North Atlantic Ocean, Station Echo. Terminal Report 1966-1973.

Observed temperature and salinity data, plus sigma-t values and sound velocities are presented for 1620 oceanographic stations occupied by U.S. Coast Guard Cutters at Ocean Station ECHO(centered at 35 deg 00'N, 48 deg 00'W) from January 1969 through June 1973. All data, including that prev...

All data, including that previously reported, was averaged by month. Plots of average temperature and average salinity versus time and average depth of isotherms and isohalines versus time are plotted by month for all patrols since September 1966. Representative T-S diagrams are included along with a typical plot of the 1st standard devitation of the monthly average temperature and salinity versus depth. The various plots are analyzed to examine annual cycles at ECHO. The sea surface temperature at ECHO reaches a monthly average maximum of about 26C in August and a minimum usually of about 18C in March. The surface effects are largely limited to the upper 200 meters of the water column. A series of temperature and salinity cycles below 200 meters of two to three months duration, probably a barotropic response, is noted at intermediate depths. Also, dissolved oxygen measurements are analyzed for two cruises. Text North Atlantic Defense Technical Information Center: DTIC Technical Reports database
