The discrete data sets representing monthly average sea surface temperatures have been filtered by Fourier series expansion and found to be closely approximated by a continuous function comprised of a constant plus a single weighted cosine of frequency one cycle per year. The one cycle per year temperature variations for the various locations were determined to synchronous and to comprise 97% or greater of the total data variance in any given one-degree square.
