Description
Summary:The report is an interim report on some studies of sea/air interaction and application of the results. The formulas used in the synoptic computation of heat exchange are reviewed and the results compared to some earlier work. The synoptic heat exchange analyses are compared to mean charts demonstrating the smoothing of features. Monthly mean total heat exchange charts for 1966 and 1967 are presented, the essential features are described and year-to-year changes are pointed out. The sensible plus latent and total heat exchange is summarized by oceanic regions and the local differences in annual cycles are described, indicating the main source regions of moisture and heat. The mean annual heat storage change in the Northern Hemisphere oceans is computed, showing that the greatest change occurs in the surface layers above 60m and along the major warm currents.
