Oceanographic Cruise Summary, Ross Sea and McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, February 1970.

The Naval Oceanographic Office conducted a two-phase oceanographic survey in the Ross Sea and McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, during February 1970. The first phase was a study of the currents in and near McMurdo Sound by implanting three current meter arrays. The second phase consisted of obtaining tempe...

The first phase was a study of the currents in and near McMurdo Sound by implanting three current meter arrays. The second phase consisted of obtaining temperature and salinity data at 28 ice prediction stations in the western part of the Ross Sea. Only one current meter array was recovered; the other two arrays were lost as a result of newly formed ice and severe cold. Data from the current meter films have been transferred to magnetic tape for computer processing. As in the two previous years of the ice prediction survey, Antarctic Surface Water, Shelf Water, and Circumpolar Water were encountered in the 1970 survey. 'True' Winter Water similarly was not detected.
