Summary:An outlook of expected sea ice conditions in the Ross Sea and McMurdo Sound regions of Antarctica is presented for the period mid-November 1968 through mid-January 1969. Oceanographic and climatic data for these areas were analyzed in terms of sea ice growth during the past austral winter. These analyses, combined with observed ice conditions for the period 11 through 15 October 1968 and a comprehensive study of historical ice and climatic information, formed the basis for the 1968-69 Ice Outlook. In summary, severe ice conditions were observed in the Ross Sea on the preliminary aerial reconnaissance. Compared to the 1967-68 season, ice conditions are expected to be lighter in the Ross Sea and heavier in McMurdo Sound. (Author)
