Summary: | Data collected on this survey indicate three possible major sources of water moving into the East Siberian Sea. Wind appears to be the dominant factor on distribution of physical and chemical properties and current velocities. Currents were generally greater than .20m./sec. but varied from .30m./sec. at the surface to .10 m./sec. at the bottom. They set generally to the southwest corresponding to the predominant northeast winds observed during the survey. Anchored time-series oceanographic stations showed significant changes in temperature and salinity in the upper 10 meters over a 24-hour period. These data emphasize the lack of steady state conditions in the East Siberian Sea and the great changes in physical characteristics caused by changes in wind and climatic conditions. (Author) |
