Summary: | A prediction system is developed for computing the acoustic parameters: geometrical spreading loss, travel time, ray angle and slant range. The system is applicable to all underwater sound transmissions generated by non-vertexing rays. The prediction system has the advantage of being able to: (1) generate the complete spectrum of values for the acoustic parameters in a large oceanographic area over an annual time period; (2) index the predicted contours with two indicies; (3) include the influence of non-zero horizontal gradients in the sound-velocity profile; (4) provide a maximum error bound on the difference between a predicted value and the value that would be obtained by a sound-ray calculation; and (5) use the computed errors to delineate the oceanographic area in which the predictions are valid. The prediction system, or model, is used to obtain all contours of the acoustic parameters, geometrical spreading loss and ray angle at transducer that can be associated with the North American Basin. A second development for predicting geometrical spreading loss is also presented for its theoretical interest. This analysis presents techniques for determining the essential characteristics of a sound-velocity profile via the construction of an equivalent linear profile. The analysis provides an instructive view of the environmental dependence of underwater acoustics. (Author) |
