Magazine Headwall Response to Explosive Blast

This report presents results of a study for predicting analytically the dynamic response of magazine headwalls subjected to blast pressure loadings resulting from the explosion of the contents of an adjacent magazine. Primary study objective is to simulate headwalls in the Eskimo I test by a finite...

Primary study objective is to simulate headwalls in the Eskimo I test by a finite element model and to compare results with test data. A nonlinear finite element computer program, INSLAB Code, is used to compute dynamic responses of the headwall. Headwall material behavior is described by a bilinear moment-curvature relationship, and supporting soil is simulated by a series of dampers. Calculations are performed for three different blast loadings, each selected on the basis of measured data and theoretical derivations. Results are compared with available measurements.
