Distribution of Glaze-Rime Deposits in the Lower 300-Meter Layer of the Atmosphere

Ice glaze-rime deposits produce very sizeable loads on structures. Intense deposits cause breaks in wire and power transmission lines (PTL) and communication lines (CL), collapsing of supports, demolition of towers, antennas, and so on. Therefore in designing and operating PTL, CL, and various kinds...

Intense deposits cause breaks in wire and power transmission lines (PTL) and communication lines (CL), collapsing of supports, demolition of towers, antennas, and so on. Therefore in designing and operating PTL, CL, and various kinds of tall structures, one must know the possible load they must bear of glaze and rime. From observations on Obnisk Tower in the winter of 1963-1964 a detailed study was made of several cases of glaze and rime formation in the moist near-cloud layer, fog, and in radiation cooling. The aim of this study is to generalize from observational data made of glaze in the 300 m layer, taken at the Obnisk Tower in 1962-1967.
