Summary:The data at 2 fixed stations along an east-west section of the Brazilian coast near Rio de Janeiro show correlation between observations of wind, sea level, sea temperature and currents. Easterly winds are associated with low temperatures, low sea levels and westward currents. Minimum values of sea level and sea temperature are obtained in the summer and also in the winter. In the Fall the maximum values of sea level and sea temperature are observed. Offshore observations show a maximum incursion of cold water (upwelling) over the continental shelf in winter (July cruise) and summer (November cruise); the minimum incursion of cold water is in the Fall (April cruise). A geostrophic model shows a net transport in the same direction indicated by the data. (Author)
