The basic attention is given to problems directly associated with ice navigating capability and strength. Navigating capability and maneuvering characteristics of ships in motion in solid ice is investigated. Together with the traditional experimental-theoretical approach to these problems, theoretical-probability methods of estimating ice navigation speed and maneuvering qualities of ships are developed, based on data from full-scale tests. An analysis of the process of wedging of an ice breaker in ice is also given. Where ice strength is referred to, the effect of the slope of the hull on the parameters of direct and reflected impacts is investigated, and various schemes for the calculation of elements of the side framing and shell plating are considered. Description and analysis of strain-gauge tests of the ice resistance of hulls of transport vessels and ice breakers is reported.
