The vastness of the oceans, the large-scale nature of many oceanic phenomena, and the slowness and expense of in-situ measurements point to a need for more rapid and continuous observations of the ocean. The need for greater perspective, and broader synoptic coverage are accelerating the development and use of remote oceanographic sensors from ships, aircraft and spaceborne platforms.
