For combat operations in forested areas, combat engineer activity features extensive use of locally acquired timber for shelters, fortification, log obstacles and improvised roadways. In cold climate, icebound swamps, rivers and streams may be passable for military vehicles: attention must be given to the ability of the ice to support military traffic without mishap. Conventional engineer support must be modified to overcome the adverse effect of winter and forest growth in such a way as to use them to advantage against the enemy. (Author) Trans. of mono.
