Summary: | An air dropped penetrometer has been developed for the U.S. Coast Guard to remotely measure the thickness of sea ice. The development program is described, and the test data and results of the Arctic test program are presented and discussed. The sea ice thickness in the vicinity of Thule Air Base, Greenland, and Alert, Canada, was measured by the penetrometers with an accuracy of plus or minus 3 inches (plus or minus 7.6 cm) during the April 1971 tests.
