Summary:The temporal behavior of auroral radio absorption measured with riometers at medium and high latitudes displays complex patterns that differ spatially. These differences may be limited to a time-displacement of otherwise similar absorption patterns, indicating a movement which could be interpreted in terms of a structured, locally enhanced, precipitating, energetic particle stream that moves over a geographic area while preserving its structure. In order to assess numerically the spatial coherence of auroral radio absorption, a correlation study of such absorption patterns has been undertaken. Data were recorded by more than eight riometer stations during five days of varying activity containing the magnetic storm of 18 April 1965. With a day as the sample size, the results of this study provide a view of the spatial coherence of auroral absorption which could be exploited further for the prediction of ionospheric propagation in the arctic.
