Description
Summary:The material presented summarizes the first results of a comprehensive study of the physical characteristics of the Antarctic ice sheet. The basic data used are maps of surface and base topography, accumulation rate, and surface (10 m) temperature, published in the Soviet Atlas of Antarctica and Map Folio 2 of the American Geographical Society and modified in some details by means of more recent expedition results. On the assumption of a balanced mass budget these data (smoothed over distances of the order of 100 km) have made it possible to construct tentative plan maps and profiles for the following features not previously mapped: ice cap flow lines, balance ice flow velocities and strain rates, basal heating rates, temperature-depth profiles, dielectric absorption of radar signals, vertical temperature gradients in the ice near the surface, basal temperatures, and melt rates.
