Description
Summary:The document describes the conceptual design and testing of a unique icebreaking vessel. The hull form is developed around 'least energy' ice handling techniques and a model testing program is conducted to optimize the concept. A math model of the ice handling principle is presented to support the testing program. Ice cutters are designed utilizing the water cannon principle. The performance and characteristics of the water cannon are developed. Underwater jets are investigated for flushing the broken ice away from the channel edge. Life cycle costs are presented for a river icebreaker system. Naval architecture studies and machinery selection complete the design package. (Author)
