The radar imagery was obtained during the latter part of April 1962 by a USAF high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft equipped with a side- looking, scanner-type radar unit. USA CRREL personnel made visual aerial observations of the ice imaged by radar, utilizing USN ice reconnaissance aircraft active in the area during this period. Conventional hand-held aerial photography of the ice characteristics was obtained on these flights and some of these photographs are included to supplement the radar imagery.
