In January the melting may reach 3-4cm a day. The melting ends in February and March, depending on the geographical location and climatological conditions. In the eastern hemisphere the ice edge disappears by the second half of February; in the western hemisphere it disappears later. The dates of the disappearance of ice for years 1956 and 1967 have been recorded at Mirnyy reyd, Molodezhnaya and Lazarev sectors. The formation of ice has been recorded for years 1956 to 1966 at Mirnyy reyd. In addition, the paper lists data on drift ice and ice boundaries, their variations, ice thickness, melting, formation, concentration and other aspects.
