Water Masses and the Distribution of Oceanological Properties (Vodnye Massy i Raspredelenie Okeanologicheskikh Kharakteristik)

By analyzing the distribution of oceanological properties or characteristics, one can see that the extreme values of individual characteristics, which are not associated with common origin, occur at various depths. It is, for example, known that in central parts of oceans the smallest concentrations...

It is, for example, known that in central parts of oceans the smallest concentrations of oxygen occur at smaller depths (500-1000m) than the greatest concentrations of silicon acid. Still greater differences separate the extreme values of water temperature and salinity. Depth levels for maximum values of water temperature and salinity are given. On lat. 47 deg 30 min S the maximum temperature is observed at the depth of 1200m, whereas the maximum salinity is observed at the depth of 2000m, the difference being 800m; on 55 degrees S the difference between the temperature and salinity values reaches 1600m, but on 68 degrees S 100m. North of 47 deg 30 min S the water temperature decreases gradually from surface to the bottom. The depth maximum of salinity is observed north of this latitude.
