Summary:In the area of the occurrence of perennially frozen rocks, in the layer of summer thawing, there are accomplished the processes of physical erosion, leading to the formation in the soils of primary silty particles, and also the unique but extensive physical-chemical, chemical and microbiological processes, as is evidenced by: The presence of a large quantity of secondary silty particles (microaggregates), having formed during the freezing of the soils as a result of the coagulation of the organic and mineral colloids; a sufficiently large absorbing complex of the soils in the North; the presence in their mineralogical composition, of secondary minerals; the intensive processes of gleying, causing the peptization of the previously formed microaggregates and a seasonal variation in the value of the absorbing aggregation of the soils. The gleying processes are accompanied by the formation of a considerable amount of hydrophilic organic and mineral colloids, which under conditions of oversaturation promote the development of the thixotropic structure of the soils. The thixotropic soils during a mechanical effect (mixing, shaking) convert to a quicksand state; it is necessary to take this into account in an engineering-geological evaluation of these soils.
