ANTICYCLONIC CIRCULATION OF ICE IN THE ARCTIC BASIN AND THE DRIFT OF NORTH POLE-8 STATION (Antitsiklonicheskaya Tsirkulyatsiya ldov v Arkticheskom Basseine i Dreif Stantsii Severnyi Polyus-8)

The drift of North Pole 8 Station is charted and compared with the drift of other Soviet and American stations. The data show that there is a circular transarctic water circulation in the American sector of the Arctic Ocean. Its size changes from year to year, depending on the existing current syste...

Its size changes from year to year, depending on the existing current system and prevailing winds. Between this zone and the north coast of Greenland is an area where the ice drifts at a slow and unsteady rate. In summer part of the ice floating in this area is brought into the straits of the Canadian and Arctic Archipelago. From here the ice can be brought into the Greenland Sea only after the completion of the circular anticyclonic route. In addition, there is an area from where the ice has never been involved in the circular drift.
