When the ice and food conditions are favorable, the number of baleen whales is considerable in the S and SE parts of the Chukchi Sea. The operation of the Aleut whaling fleet was successful at such times. The presence of small cetaceans in the Bering Strait and the southern part of the Chukchi Sea enable our whalers to operate successfully from coastal stations, hunting the minke whales, killer whales and belugas. The hunting of walrus must be forbidden due to its small population size. This will not endanger the livelihood of the local people.
