Summary:Bench-mark damage in polar regions associated with permafrost and ground ice is analyzed, and proper construction methods are discussed. A metal pipe about 60 mm in diameter, with a disk about 150 mm in diameter welded on the lower end, is not liable to destruction or change in elevation when the disk is placed at a depth equal to three times the thickness of the active layer.
