STUDY OF CHERT POPOUTS, WOLF RIVER FLOODWALL, MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE; INITIAL OBSERVATIONS.

The need for a program of systematic observations on the formation and development of chert popouts on concrete surfaces has long been recognized. After preliminary inspections, a group of eight monoliths in the floodwall along the Wolf River, Memphis, Tenn., was selected in 1959 for continuing stud...

After preliminary inspections, a group of eight monoliths in the floodwall along the Wolf River, Memphis, Tenn., was selected in 1959 for continuing study. The investigation includes periodic field inspections and laboratory work to provide additional data and to correlate the results. The data obtained thus far on the surfaces under study suggest that: (a) popouts associated with chert particles do not form on these exposed concrete surfaces in the absence of freezing temperatures; (b) elapsed time between completion of construction and exposure of these concrete surfaces to freezing did not appear to influence rate of development of chert popouts; (c) chert popouts may become enlarged by frost action through the failure of an additional volume of the porous chert particle which caused the popout or by the failure of other exposed by the first popout.
