Summary:In view of the hazards posed to railroads and highways by the formation of ice in the permafrost areas of the USSR, the author describes the dynamics of the icing process and the effect of various factors such as weather, climate, terrain, and man-made structures on the intensity of the ice-forming process. The study is limited to two types of ice formations, namely ground ice formations and key ice formations. Also described are certain phenomena associated with the development of the ice process, the most important of which is suffusion of the soil.
