EXPERIENCE IN THE CONTROL OF GLACIERS ON THE TAYSHET-LENA RAILWAY

The problem of combating key and ground glaciers along the railroad had been solved, however, it is still a serious problem as regard to river glaciers, since the retaining of ice by earthen embankments surrounding man-made structure prove to be inadequate. In many cases the hydrogeological and topo...

In many cases the hydrogeological and topographic conditions prevented the construction of embankments. The prevention of the formation of glaciers near man-made structure should be regarded as the most effective means of controlling ice. Constant or periodic electrical heating of a stream near installations can be used on electrified railroads. On non-electrified railroads attempts should be made to construct an embankment on the upper side of installations with a basin depth of 4-5 meters, and in this case the installations themselves should lead off to the slopes of the valleys or into the streams.
