Description
Summary:The report contains a cruise summary, and charts for R/V CHAIN Cruises 70 and 73 during which a geophysical survey was made of the continental rise off eastern North America from the area of the Laurentian Channel to Cape Hatteras. In this report are continuous photo reproductions of the original Echo-sounding records. Adjacent pages show the ship track, soundings, and observations made. Also included are duplicate track sheets showing total intensity magnetic field measurements (in Gammas). The ship tracks are plotted on a Mercator Projection (scale 1 degree longitude equals 4 inches) that shows the track of the entire cruise. The type of observations made during the cruise are noted by suitable symbols or legends along the track. Soundings, read at each break in slope, are written along the ship's track as often as space permits. Soundings are based on a sound velocity of 800 Fathoms/second and are corrected only for depth of transducer. (Author) Sponsored in part by Office of Naval Research, Washington, D. C.
