Reproduction in the brown lemming, Lemmus trimucronatus, was compared during all phases of their cyclic population fluctuations over a six-year period at Barrow, Alaska. The failure of density-dependent, intrinsic factors to affect reproduction significantly in the lemming, and the strong influence of extrinsic factors on all phases of reproductive effort and excess are discussed from the standpoint of evolution. A north-south gradient in the type and severity of population-controlling mechanisms is suggested. (Author) Pub. in University of California Publications in Zoology, v85.
